Our History

It all started in 1969…

June 1969

A group of local residents met in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Sullivan to discuss starting a community theater, which would be called Washington Community Theater.

Fall 1969

WCT’s first production, Anniversary Waltz, was directed by Ken Frazier and presented at the Beth Israel Synagogue.

July 1975

WCT puts on its first musical, The Music Man, directed by Peggy Pepper and starring Elaine Moore and Don Cummins, at the Washington Park Main Pavilion (now the Washington Park Rotary Club Main Pavilion).

September 1976

WCT held its only play ever at the park, The Odd Couple, and moved subsequent Fall shows to other venues around Washington to avoid the cold! 

Summer 1982

WCT performs its first show with live microphones, The Sound of Music, directed by Peggy Pepper. 

1984

Mr. Barry Wood directs his first show at WCT, Annie Get Your Gun. He directed 28 shows at WCT during his lifetime. 

Summer 1987

The cast of Oliver breaks (and continues to hold) WCT’s record for “largest cast” at 109 cast members.

1997

WCT presented its longest ever show, Camelot, directed by Cindy Berg. It was the only show that started one evening and ended early the next morning!

2002

WCT gained its nonprofit cooperative corporation status, officially becoming known as The Washington Community Theatre, Inc. 

2014

The famous Barry Wood directed his last two shows, Brigadoon in Summer and Happy Holidaze in Fall. 

2017

WCT Kidz was established.

2019

WCT celebrates 50 years as a community theater group.

2021

WCT performs its first show back - “Into The Woods,” directed by Adam Brock - after a season and a half was cancelled due to COVID. 

2025

WCT celebrates its 50th year of musical performances at Washington Park. 


Fun Facts

11 shows have been repeated over the course of the 50 years.

The Music Man (3 times); Brigadoon;  Mame; Fiddler on the Roof; Annie Get Your Gun; Oliver; Jerry’s Girls; Stepping Out, The Odd Couple, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Wizard of Oz.

Production role achievements

  • Barry Wood has directed the most shows for us – 28; followed by Peggy Pepper, having directed 17
  • Elaine Frost has served as choral director for 35 shows.
  • Carleen Vilella has choreographed 26 shows.
  • Patty Thompson has produced nearly every show – both summer and fall from 2001 to 2022.
